 1. What is the Apple TV?

This might seem like a strange question, but even for our users and longtime owners of the Apple TV, trying to answer it often results in a support ticket. This excerpt from an article published by Apple Insider puts the frustration (and reason for this Help Center topic) into words:

What's the difference between Apple TV, Apple TV app, and Apple TV+?

"If you instantly know the difference between Apple TV, Apple TV app, and Apple TV+, then remember there's also Apple TV Channels, Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, and the Apple TV apps for Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and TV sets...

Counting the different services, the different hardware, and the different apps, we make it that you can use the words "Apple TV" to mean about eight different things."       - William Gallagher, Apple Insider

 2. Apple TV, the Apple TV app, and the Apple TV App Store

  Apple TV

The Apple TV proper is a physical box that serves as a streaming device. Apple TV connects to supported displays and smart devices through a variety of methods, including HDMI video I/O, WiFi, and AirPlay. Apple TVs come in three models: Apple TV (classic), Apple TV HD, and Apple TV 4K*. Just as iPhones run on iOS, and Macbooks run on MacOS, the Apple TV runs on tvOS (television operating system).

*The DREAMSTAGE App is available on the Apple TV 4K. Ultra HD live stream playback is in the works, but HD/1080p is the current standard maximum resolution.

Apple TV app

The Apple TV App lets you watch shows, channels, movies, and content from select streaming platforms, The Apple TV App comes pre-installed on a number of devices.

In certain cases, an app you know should be available on the Apple TV App Store isn't showing up, even though Apple TV is installed on your device, or even though you are using Apple's own iPhone.

This issue comes up very often, as many users aren't aware that a third-party app has to be supported by both Apple TV (which is software in this instance) and the operating system on the device where Apple TV is installed (or where the Apple TV app is downloaded).

For example, if you have Apple TV on your Samsung Smart TV, you might not see the same apps in the Apple TV App Store as you would if you opened it on an iPhone, Mac, Roku, Apple TV (the hardware), et cetera...

The DREAMSTAGE App is a third-party app with native tvOS support. This means you can find, download, and stream with DREAMSTAGE only on devices that support native tvOS software and applications. Right now, the only devices in Apple's line of products that supports tvOS is the physical Apple TV. This includes the Apple TV, Apple TV HD/1080p, and Apple TV 4K.

This is also why you might now be able to find the DREAMSTAGE App no matter how hard you look. You must own an Apple TV box to view the correct instance of the Apple TV App Store via Apple TV app.

Therefore, while the Apple TV and Apple TV app display a long list of supported devices and services on their support pages, the list of DREAMSTAGE supported devices is one item long. DREAMSTAGE was (lovingly, laboriously, and excitingly) designed to operate with Apple TV.

 4. Sign in to your Apple ID

We give users the option to sign in and sign up for DREAMSTAGE accounts using their Apple ID. Connecting your Apple ID with your DREAMSTAGE account does not imply support for the DREAMSTAGE App on your device.

> Set up your Apple ID on Apple TV

Before you head over to DREAMSTAGE, make sure you are signed in to both the Apple TV app and your Apple ID on your streaming device. If you do not have an Apple ID, you will need to create one.

How to create a new Apple ID

If you are signing in to your Apple ID on a new device or browser, it will require a password and verification code. The verification code will generally appear as a text, notification, or phone call. If you don't receive a verification code automatically, you can get one from Settings, even if your device is offline.

> I forgot the password for my Apple ID

5. Create and connect your DREAMSTAGE Account

Once you check that you are signed in to your Apple ID, open the Apple TV App Store.

Search for the DREAMSTAGE app, and start the download. Once the download is complete, you will open the DREAMSTAGE from your application home.

Complete the setup process by signing in or signing up through the DREAMSTAGE App.

6. Backward compatibility and tested tvOS version support

The DREAMSTAGE App for Apple TV supports tvOS versions 12.0 and higher.

It is recommended you upgrade to the latest version of tvOS (v. 13.4.5, released May 20, 2020) for an optimal streaming experience.

If you're unsure what version of tvOS your Apple TV is running, see

How to update your Apple TV.

Fourth and Fifth Generation Apple TVs run on the tvOS operating system, which does not support the earlier generations of Apple TV. If your Apple TV is an earlier model (purchased before 2015), you will need upgrade before continuing.
